Our hotels in Prince Frederick make it easy to explore the beaches of Chesapeake Bay. The seaside bluffs at Calvert Cliffs State Park are packed with prehistoric fossils like shark’s teeth and crustacean shells. Beachcombers can search for fossils that occasionally wash up on shore. A short drive farther south from our Prince Frederick hotels is the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons, where you can examine a collection of the cliffs’ most impressive fossils. The museum’s Drum Point Lighthouse is one of Maryland’s last remaining screw-pile lighthouses. A quick museum shuttle-bus ride connects to Cove Point, where a classic stark-white 19th-century lighthouse still guides ships through the night.

Guests of our Prince Frederick hotels will have little trouble finding crab houses and oyster shacks up and down Chesapeake Bay and in the tiny fishing village of Solomons. Order steamed crabs, here cooked the traditional way—in a big pot of boiling water seasoned with Old Bay spices. With mallet in hand, you break open the bright red shell to extract the sweet white meat. Wash it all down with an icy mug of beer. Savor raw oysters on the half shell, fried oysters with a squeeze of lemon or classic Maryland crab cakes.

Tennison, an 1899 log bugeye built for oyster dredging.
