Local champions from each of the Stock, Super Stock and Masters division Soap Box Derby races throughout the world come to Akron, Ohio, in July each year to compete for scholarships and merchandise prizes in the All-American Soap Box Derby. Upon their arrival, each of the young champions are whisked into Akron with a police escort. As the young boy or girl arrives at the site of the welcoming ceremonies, the Derby band strikes up a tune and an announcer introduces the champion to the crowd.

E. J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall, built by The University of Akron and a group of dedicated community leaders, begins its 36th year as an outstanding performing arts complex and cultural center. Since its first season in 1973, the Hall has exceeded expectations and grown in stature as a cultural and community center for northern Ohio.

Firestone Stadium was dedicated on July 25, 1925 by Harvey S. Firestone, Sr., founder of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. The Stadium was constructed for the recreation of the employees of Firestone, and the numerous fastpitch and slowpitch softball teams in Akron. The Stadium was owned and operated by Firestone until 1988, when the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company donated the historic stadium to the City of Akron.
